Despite a glorious week, the warm weather couldn't make a dent in overall heat units which will now be at a hundred or so behind the ten year average. Some corn was hit very hard by the frost at the end of the previous week and those plants have been completely killed. Others were only partially affected but essentially, there will be no additional yield to corn at this stage of the year, and some farmers may also face quality reduction from the shortened growing season. Corn moisture at this time of the year is also high so leaving the corn in the fields will help them dry down and therefore reduced some propane expense for drying. Most soybeans have dried down and many of the plants have lost their leaves so combining will be underway this week. Lots of farmers managed to get some bonus haymaking into the mix with 3rd and 4th cuts due to the unseasonably warm and dry weather.
