Most of Quebec’s maple syrup producers harvested their first sap last week. Producers from the Montéregie to the Bas-Saint-Laurent reported boiling their first batches of syrup. Temperatures have been about as warm in Eastern Quebec as in Western Quebec, meaning producers in the East have been able to start pumping earlier than average.
And, maple syrup producers in the Eastern Townships received a total of $466,000 in insurance from the Financière agricole to compensate for bad weather in 2012. Early warmth destroyed much of the region’s maple syrup crop. The Eastern Townships had generally favourable conditions last year other than this.
