Starting out with approximately 85 acres and as a dairy farm, Brysonwood Farms has expanded to 250 acres. When the cows and quota were sold in 2007, the land was divided into three zones, with each dedicated to the three crops it now grows: wheat, soya and corn.
As of spring 2015, the farm has been in transition to become a completely organic operation. "The organic cropping style has become my favourite part," Doug explains, "because it means working to improve your soil structure by using the tools nature gave you."
According to Doug, "the transition from conventional farming practices to organic is a definite change of pace, because it requires a new mentality about what can and can't be used in the fields."
Organic farming also takes some getting used to because it requires the farmer to provide the crops with what they need, without resorting to usual synthetic fertilizers. "Learning to live with weeds," is an example Doug uses to highlight the learning process involved in the transition.
Brysonwood Farms has come a long way in its 192 years of operation, and Doug plans to continue its development. Doug's future plans for the farm include, "developing it into a strong agribusiness," in addition to wanting to, "add some form of animal production to the farm to help diversify the business."
Even undergoing all of these changes, Brysonwood Farms remains a pillar of agricultural excellence in the area, a tradition Doug plans to uphold.
