Early January has been cold and relatively dry with little snow or precipitation. The area received its first -30 C low during the second week, with an average daily temperature of -3.4C.
For 2014, the year ended with near normal total precipitation. Eight of the 12 months were below average for the temperature, with March recording the coldest month since Peter began collecting records 47 years ago. Heat units for the year were 3160, which was 40 below average. The average temperature for 2014 was +6.5 C, which compares to the 42-year average of +6.51 C. So, despite the fact that the world experienced the warmest year since records began in 1880, 2014 was merely average in the Ormstown region. The average for 1997 to 2006 was +7.15 C, and +7.17 C for 2007 to 2014. The warmest year was 2012 with an average temperature of +8.35 C and the coolest was 1972 at +5.35 C.
