Agricultural fair season is upon us, and what better way to start it than with Expo Ormstown.
The fair begins on Thursday with floats parading through the streets of Ormstown decorated according to this year's theme, "Blue Jeans & Country Dreams". Over the course of the weekend, you can easily fill your day visiting agricultural exhibits and watching livestock shows, admiring the handicrafts and various displays, and attending the big crowd-pleasing events, such as the pig roundup (Thursday), demolition derby (Sunday) and the Elgin Pipe Band (Sunday).
Then, at night you have a choice of listening to live music in the Family Center, at the Green Rooster Pub, or in the Refreshment tent. If you want to get the full Expo Ormstown experience, you can spend one night at each!
Organizers have been working tirelessly since the end of last year's fair to put on a good show for visitors. Christina Franc, manager of Expo Ormstown, says, "We're always looking for ways to improve. Last year, our office staff was taking notes on how we can improve for this year and I'm fairly confident the improvements we've implemented this year will make Expo Ormstown 2016 even better than last year's." Small changes can make the biggest difference, such as offering this year, credit and debit card machines at the gates and publishing the Expo 101 Rookie Guide to get the most out of your Expo Ormstown experience!
To get the most out of their own experience, organizers still try to make a point to go out to see their favourite event during the weekend. One of the organizers, Sarah Enright, says that her favourite event at Expo Ormstown "is the cattle show because of the sociability." As past president of Quebec 4-H and a representative of the Quebec Federation Association, Sarah is very involved in the dairy cattle community, so the cattle show presents an opportunity for her to exchange with other farmers about the various realities on their farms.
Start the agricultural fair season by putting on your blue jeans and living your country dreams at the 102nd edition of Expo Ormstown!
