In the past few days, the emergency room at the Hôpital du Suroît in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield was running with an occupancy rate of 330%.
Doctors are being asked to surpass the limited number of patients they can see and specialists are being asked to take on more patients to help the emergency room. But that is extremely difficult to do especially since the hospital is already running at maximum capacity. A doctor can have up to 12 patients, but it is nearly impossible to divide yourself among 18 patients.
One proposed solution remains in the bed space and intermediate resources for patients who can use them and especially homecare. If people can stay at home with support for as long as possible, that would help free up beds for those who need it in emergency situations.
