Zeus, the Greek God of Rain and Lord of the sky saw fit to allow a three hour window of opportunity to get in the 2nd Annual Apple Blossom fun run on Saturday, May 11 without any showers or inhospitable weather.
The apples, crabapples and lilacs were in full bloom with vibrant white, pink and mauve flowers and the sweet fragrance of Mother Nature’s spring time symphony was a welcome enticement to all the participants.
It was a delight to witness the excited, smiling and laughing faces of all, who were eager to share the camaraderie of old friends and the making of new ones. For some it was their first experience of running a 5K or 10K and without a doubt they would experience the self satisfaction of completing their chosen distance or achieving a personal best. You never know what you will experience. I will take away the memories of Moms running with their daughters or Dad’s trying to keep up with their sons and loved ones welcoming their partners at the finish line with signs and applause of encouragement. Sometimes you take away something even more rewarding than participating in the event itself as an active participant.
There were well in excess of 150 participants, volunteers and supporters who were on hand to support the fundraiser which would benefit the two regional high schools, Chateauguay Valley Regional and Arthur Pigeon and their respective Education Foundations. In the end, receipts totaled in excess of $1500, which are to be split equally between the two schools. It never ceases to amaze the generosity of some and to what length they will go to, in order to be supportive.
Gift certificate door prizes, donated by Running Room were awarded to Suzanne Robidoux, Ella Bourgon Olivia Hamilton and Isabelle Vincent.
A special thank you has to go to the Stevenson family who allowed the organizers to host the run/walk event at Les Vergers Stevenson. Their generosity in making their apple facility available, certainly contributed to a successful and enjoyable outing.
Additional thanks go to our main sponsor, The Running Room and the Franklin Centre Town Council for giving the organizers permission to host the event on their municipal roads. Other donations from local business owners included MNA Stephane Billette, Leahy Orchards, IGA Huntingdon and Assurance Bourgon.
The success of this year’s event certainly bids well for a third edition Apple Blossom Fun Run come next May. We also host an annual Rudolph Fun Run the last Saturday in November, raising funds for local Xmas basket charities. Hope to see you then!!
