The mayor formally resigned on Tuesday because he felt he did not have enough support from the rest of the council. The mayor noted this is a decision he had been thinking about for the last month.
Côté was elected in November 2013, defeating Johanne Roy for the position of mayor.
After a citizen launched a complaint against a municipal inspector and that story was subsequently published in the Gleaner, council resolved to support their employee in this situation, a move Côté allegedly did not agree with.
The current deputy mayor will fill in for the next six months until an election can be held, which will cost the town approximately $5,000.
